Project Title: VCT promotion for prevention of mother to child transmission (PMCT) of HIV.

PLHIV (People Living with HIV and AIDS in Albania). The Albanian Association of People Living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA) was established on October 11, 2004 to improve the quality of life of PLHIV in Albania. The PLWHA works closely with other organizations to prevent HIV, ensure treatment access, promote and protect human rights. It often collaborates with other NGOs and State institutions including the National AIDS Program.

ACPD (formerly called Albanian Family Planning Association (AFPA) is a non-for-profit organization, established in January 1993 by volunteers. It works to improve the health and wellbeing of all people in Albania, particularly vulnerable and marginalized people through the  “Aulona” Women Center in Vlora (1998), the “Center for Women and Girls” in Elbasan (2005), the “PO” Youth Centre in Tirana (October 2000) and the “Trokitja” Youth Center in Shkodra (May 2001 ). Women and young people are targeted by ACPD activities; its Women and Youth Centers, recognized for their professionalism in the services they offer, have contributed to the improvement of reproductive health, family planning and sexual health for Albanian Women and adolescents, by increasing access to quality information and counseling services. Training of young people on decision-making, negotiation, conflict resolution and reconciliation are provided at the two youth centers. ACPD has published manual and booklets for youth and women benefiting thousands of women and youth.

 Project Title: To maintain low HIV prevalence among vulnerable groups in the Region of Elbasan.

The Association “For A Healthy Albania” has been working since 2005 in the Elbasan Area, supporting peer education structures among Roma people, MSM, Commercial Sex Workers, Illegal Drug Users and Migrant Workers. An important lesson-learnt is that working with women is likely to yield better results in terms of condom use and use of available services.
